Listen & Cook: Meredith’s May Wine From Into the Midnight Wood

By Erin Murphy

There are at least 100 things wrong with Meredith Schwarzwelder. In fact, keeping track of these things is the only way David Carew has managed to remain living with him for as long as he has. Meredith is an irredeemable eccentric who flirts with everyone in his path (#3 on the list), cries at anything (#35), makes the worst coffee in the world (#70), and talks to mice, or imagines he does (#50).

Another thing about Meredith that surely drives David batty? The chaotic way that he writes his recipes. That, and the fact that David finds himself becoming increasingly fond of all Meredith’s little quirks. That is particularly annoying.

If you find yourself to be kooky like Meredith or fancy yourself to be someone who can decode the kooky like David, take a whirl at making Meredith’s handwritten recipe for May Wine. You’ll need a cup of sugar (or was it a pinch?), 2 bottles of wine (or was it 3?), and the audiobook of Into the Midnight Wood to keep you company while you work your mixology magic.

In Into the Midnight Wood, magic starts to seep from the wood that David and Meredith live next to. On top of that, when Meredith’s brother gets engaged to the daughter of David’s boss, David sees an opportunity: If he can insert himself into the festivities, maybe he can advance his career and get himself out of a personal rut. And there’s his darn fondness for Meredith again, which doesn’t seem to be going away.

Into the Midnight Wood is a contemporary queer fairy tale about the masks we wear, the stories we tell, and the powerful need for true, honest connection to heal old wounds and new. And isn’t that worth raising a glass of May Wine to?
