Pippi Longstocking Rides Again! Hear Sutton Foster Narrate the Beloved Series on Audio

She has red pigtails, no parents, and a horse that lives on the porch. She’s Pippi Longstocking: the beloved character created by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren who for generations of young readers has been synonymous with the very spirit of adventure, resilience, and friendship. Or as Tony Award-winning actor Sutton Foster puts it: “Pippi is unlike anyone you’ve ever met before. She’s one of a kind, she marches to the beat of her own drum, she’s always game for adventure. She’s timeless, even though she’s 80.” Sutton is the new audiobook narrator for three of Lindgren’s classic Pippi books (Pippi Longstocking, Pippi Goes on Board, and Pippi in the South Seas), all newly-released as part of a yearlong celebration of Pippi’s 80th birthday.

Foster’s new recordings expand on a legacy. Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking was first recorded and released on LP and narrated by actress Esther Benson in 1962. As a nostalgia easter egg, the opening and closing music of the new audiobooks is excerpted from the widely beloved 1970’s television series and film. Foster herself is a two-time Tony Award-winner known for her work on Broadway and as the lead of the comedy-drama series Younger (2015-2021), bringing bouyant energy to this treasured story.

“Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking is not just the strongest girl in the world,” Sutton says, in a statement. “She is a symbol of freedom, strength, kindness, courage and justice. A rebel who uses her superpowers wisely and never abuses her power. She stands up against what is wrong.”
