‘Tis the Knitting Season! Make This Cozy and On-Trend Hood

By Sarah Hilligoss

This year I wanted to make as many of my holiday gifts as possible. Admittedly, this is made easier by being a knitter and having a hefty yarn stash—which, yes, I lugged with me on my recent Manhattan-to-Brooklyn move. And yes, it took up multiple boxes.

Knitting is perhaps the thing I love to do most while listening to audiobooks, especially on relatively simple projects like the “Sophie Hood” (by Petiteknit), which I made as a gift for my mom. I’m a fairly fast knitter, so this took me about two weeks to complete, which was the perfect time to listen to the audiobook recording of Hamnet (narrated by Jessie Buckley, who also stars in the film) before seeing it in theaters. Yes, I cried. Anyways! The setting of the novel, like the movie, is vibrantly green, a type of green that almost feels impossible when walking outside right now, with each day darker and colder than the last. It was a breath of fresh, humid Stratford air.

For the hood, my mom picked out a cashmere yarn by Sandnes Garn that I held with a mohair from Knitting by Olive. The cashmere was because this hood should be as soft and non-abrasive as possible, as it will be up against her neck and face, and us sensitive skin havers know that fiber choices are very important. The mohair is to add a bit of fluff, fun, and, most importantly, warmth. My mother lives in Minnesota, so warmth is Key. Warmth is everything. Warmth is layering. Iykyk—and you can make your own hood below!

Steps to make the "Sophie Hood"

Materials:

🧶 US size 9 (5.5 cm) circular needles

🧶 200 g Cashmere by Sadnes Garn

🧶 100 g Mohair by Knitting by Olive

🧶 Small scissors

🧶 Tapestry Needle

🧶 Pattern from PetiteKnit

Tip!⭐ I started with one end of the scarf and increased stitches as recommended, slipping the last three stitches to create the i-cord, which results in a beautiful and neat edge. Then, I shaped the hood, and I knitted down the other side of the scarf. The last step was to sew up the back and weave in the ends. The results!:

I really love the winter months because I get to curl around the fire, knit, and listen to books. Nothing is cozier. However, I also miss the vibrancy of summer. So if you are also craving something alive and green during these winter months, check out, here are some others (in addition to Hamnet) I’ve listened to that I’d recommend:
